Awful from an England perspective. Roy failed his test, we've barely got bat on ball unless it was edging behind, and how many more chances in Moeen Ali going to get?!

Agree Re Ali .... but he can just say look at the others ? I don't know off the top of my head, but his average must be the worst of the recognised batsmen/all-rounders over the past 18-24 months?

Wouldn't be expecting Leach to get many 90's. Actually think we are looking at a 50/50 contest. Bowlers on both sides to dominate. Will many from here go to the games to watch or save it for the Addicks?

The Ashes will be a hard fought contest, the outcome not easy to predict at this stage. Having seen an Australian side play England A recently at Canterbury I was impressed by a number of batsmen but not so much the bowlers. Also saw the Aussie ladies and they are a good team. The summer has only just started, it will be interesting.

I agree with your prediction that it’ll be a bowler’s series and that it’s too close to call.

How's the weather looking in Barnsley today?

It was a bit, but at least we saw two very good hours of cricket! Still looks too close to call I reckon. A lot hinges on how early we can dismiss Smith.

I have never understood why fast bowling aimed at hitting the batsman in the upper body or head is even legal in cricket. For me it goes directly against the spirit of sportsmanship that this game used to be so proud of.
Steve Smith could have been killed the other day. Or his career and his life as a sportsman could have been ended.
I always though the purpose of bowling was to hit the wicket. Or at the very least to tease/deceive the batsman into making an ill-judged stroke so he could be caught out. Trying to hurt him or intimidate him? Out of order as far as I'm concerned. As wrong now as it was the first time it was ever tried.
Now we have very accurate ways of determining the flight of the ball and whether or not it would have hit the stumps, I would go so far as to say a batsman should not even be allowed to be caught out if the ball would not have hit the wicket had he not played it.
Or at least I would rather have a rule like that introduced, than continue to see people injured or even killed by cricket balls hitting them - and aimed at them delibertately - at nearly a hundred miles per hour.

I blame Don Bradman,( insert Steve Smith here ) he was so good we couldn’t get him out and so England and especially their then Captain Douglas Jardinie developed body line bowling and it worked. You just get the fastest bowler you have ( in those days Harold Larwood ) and tell him to bowl straight at the man and make him protect himself with the bat. If ever you get the chance to see a now rather dated mini series called “Bodyline” then do, it’s excellent. Poor old Harold got pilloried for following orders. As a foot note. What’s the chance of ever fielding a side with the Nawab of Pataudi in the outfield 🤔

Steve Smith knows the risks, as do all batsmen. When facing fast bowling, some have no fear but most do. Most can handle the fear but some can't.
No-one wants to see players killed or injured but injuries (and VERY occasionally fatalities) come with the sport. Take out all of the risk and you don't have a sport. It's the same in football, rugby, horse-racing, speedway etc.
From a technical point of view; Smith (brilliant player that he is) has made himself more susceptible to blows because he lines himself up by moving so far across. I'm not criticising him because I do the same thing (just not as exaggerated and clearly, not as good!) But he knows by doing so, he's likely to have to take a few blows.
Batsmen now are more protected than they have ever been. Protective equipment is available for all to use (and I think it should be a choice), the laws of the game have made it easier for batsmen since Jardine (limited number of bouncers and fielding restrictions on leg-side) and generally the pitches are more benign (they are never wet for a start).
Times have changed. I've played for a long time now but can remember the days of fielding short-leg without even a box on (and yes, I did get hit....once!!!) There were always people who were scared when it came down to the nitty-gritty but there were also a lot of very brave players who faced up to quick bowling or fielded close without helmets. As a batsman, I know having no helmet made you watch the ball and there were less people getting hit on the side of the head or neck. I'd say, I'm amazed at how many modern batsmen are getting hit but I'm not. They are not used to facing REAL pace because there aren't the pace bowlers anymore and they've got lazy. White ball cricket has meant a lot of them are committed to front foot play, which obviously isn't a lot of use if the ball is coming at your head.

Maybe Joffra Archer will inspire a new generation of fast bowlers. Let's hope so because there are precious few of them around today.
