A very enjoyable afternoon and an excellent performance from the boys.
Shrewsbury are nowhere near the side last season but that is not why we won the game so comfortably, we did so because we are a better side than we were last season and far superior to Shrewsbury on the day .
I go along with those who thought that at times in the first half we did struggle a bit in midfield but I put that down to the 3-5-2 LB started with. Shrewsbury had a player in the hole and our three central guys allowed the ball to find it's way through them to many times.
We reverted back to a flat back four with a diamond in midfield and that didn't really work either because Shrewsbury then utilsed their wide players and they were allowed too much time and space to get their crosses.
What changed the game in the first half was LB putting Jonny Williams at the top of the triangle and making him, Taylor and Grant the targets for our defenders to aim bypassing those behind them so we kept the ball out of the middle of the park where Shrewsbury seemed to want to create things from. When they did start probing Pratley was magnificent in breaking up play.
1 Phillips 7 - Didn't know much about the point blank save he made at 0-0 but solid all game.
20 Solly 7 - Captain relaible
5 Bauer 7 - Nothing got passed him in the air
23 Sarr 8 - Solid as a rock, an assured performance.
16 Purrington 6 - Quiet debut but gave us some much needed balance on the left
4 Bielik 7 - Played a key part all afternoon, a cut above L1 level
19 Morgan 5 - One for the future but struggled to make an impact over the 90 minutes in Shropshire
15 Pratley 7 - Put in a performance we know he can, broke up play all afternoon and scored a cracker
21 Williams 9 - Different class
18 Grant 7 - Should be sitting at home now with the match ball but kept going and deserved his goal
9 Taylor 10 - On another level, has everything, best striker in L1 bar none.
Lapslie 7 - Slotted straight back in as if he hadn't been away. Great future.
