Don't think there's any 'sleeping Giants' in England anymore , certainly not in the championship!

Don't think there's any 'sleeping Giants' in England anymore , certainly not in the championship! Well teams like Forest and Derby come to mind. Reason why I am asking is, I am in slight disagreement with a mate of mine who says Charlton are a sleeping giant due to our success in the Premier League and had plans for a 40k stadium and we would sell that out. Not sure I would define our success as a sleeping giant.

I'd say that outside the top six in the FAPL there's around 30 clubs who could spend time in the Championship or even sink into league 1. They might appear different in size and have different strength of support and playing staff today but they ain't tiddlers nor are they global players with millions of fans online.

Even if we were in the PL we would not sell 40,000 tickets, never in a month of Sundays! There is no such thing anymore as a 'Sleeping Giant' as seriously says. There used to be but these days there is not enough money in the game to revive the fortunes of many.

I'd say we are a slightly dozy troll.
On the other hand, Millwall are a comatose gargoyle.

I think we are at our right level in the Championship. Sometimes flirting with relegation, sometimes flirting with the play offs and when its our day having some fun in the Premiership.
No, I don't think we are sleeping giants!

We certainly were in the 60's, the crowds we got in 1969 when we just missed out on promotion showed our potential.
I agree with Reams, there are no sleeping giants anymore, TV money has made any team promoted to the Premiership one of the richest in the world, Wigan and Bournemouth have proved it could happen to any team.

Had this conversation with a Leeds fan today co-incidentally. He said he doesn't agree with the singing harking back to the "glory" days. He doesn't see Leeds as a big club anymore and believes under the current regime have a good chance of going down. If they are not a sleeping giant, I don't think there is any way we can claim to be. EssexAl has it about right.

You should have seen the size of the crowds in the 1930's we were a giant in those days.

Thanks Paul, I am still on this loaned PC. Yes you are right, but we will never ever reach those gates we had in those days at The Valley. Do you not think that television has been one of the larger culprits in lower gates?

No not really, too many wilderness years is the cause and fan base that has an age range from between 10-21 and 35+........
Unlike any other club that I have watched in my time we are lacking supporters aged between 22-34 and you have to ask who people of that age go and watch?

Yep must agree there r no sleeping giants anymore and its great the likes of wigan and Bournemouth can make the richies of the prem, but not many money men would go for a small club hoping to b the next Bournemouth they rather go for the ex sleeping giant club with a big fan base
