Our famous Selhurst promotion side, & what I think they cost: Nicky Johns - free from Millwall Mark Reid - 50k from Celtic John Humphery - free from Wolves ? George Shipley - free from Lincoln ? Peter Shirtliff - free from Sheff Wed John Pender - free from Sheff Wed Mark Stuart - Academy product Steve Gritt - got him off the Rag and Bone man Robert Lee - Academy product John Pearson - 50k from Sheff Wed Jim Melrose - 75k from Leicester ? Promoted to the top flight with that Decent shout that. However, Thommo played at centre half with Pender and when Pender got injured on the run in we had that Charlton legend Les Berry who stepped in for a few games. Pender was decent at that level. I think he got injured and never really cut it after that - although maybe Lennie just didn't fancy him. He went onto somewhere like Burnley and did ok i think. Shirtliff was signed at the start of the next season for something "big" like £125k, along with Walsh, Bolder and Peake - yet more great business by Lennie. Andy Jones signed around November time and Miller and Crooks were signed for the run in. Big Joe came the season (or two) after, along with Pates. Pearson was decent in that division, but well out of his depth the next year. I remember him scoring at west ham away in the 9 second Melrose game. Bonus points for anyone that can describe his (pearsons) goal that day. Comical. Flanagan played quite a few games in that promotion season, and Curbs played a few too. But the mainstay of our midfield that year - and player of the year I think - was Mark Aizlewood. When we beat Sheff U at home that season he put in one of the top 5 performances in a Charlton shirt that I can remember. He was brilliant that day. Great memories. That was my team. But I still think today's mob would shit all over them. Football has changed.

28th February 2012 BWP against Chesterfield, we won 4-0. However the last Phillips goal was debatable but he claimed it and was credited I believe.

Do you remember the Mammoth argument between "mister untouchable" and the rest of the forum regarding whether it was a hat trick or not? I went back years later just because of the absurdity of that night.

Despite being our skipper, I could never understand why Aizlewood was unpopular with our fans at the time. This thread has omitted the one absolute cult player from that era under Lennie. Signed for about £125k from Dundee United. Completely useless. Rumoured to like a drink. Amazingly went on to play for Man United under Fergie. any guesses?

The thread on the matter ww.charltonlife.com/discussion/46547/bwp-hat-trick/p1 I think we established on the end that it was a hattrick last touch would effectively a defender but hat trick was given nd the bookies paid on the hat trick.

Sadie, the thread I was thinking of was on the match night. I think it was closed because it was so out of control.

I thought we paid a small fee for John Humphrey - around £60,000? Could be wrong, mind you. Still think he should have played for England. The right backs at the time were Rob Jones & Lee Dixon and I always felt JH belonged in that category. I can also remember being traumatised by his move to Palace!

John Humphrey, what a player. One of our best ever signings, better than Dixon or Jones. Remember the Humphrey for England chants. Supposedly palace didn't like him, saying his heart was at Charlton. On the subject of hat tricks, Rodney Marsh scored what was at the time called the best ever hat trick in the 70's. Never seen a better hat trick than Clive Mendoncas at Wembley. Each goal was total class. Beats Marsh's. Oh yeah, Rodney Marsh is a twat aswell.

I am sure that it was Kenny Sansom or Gary Stevens who kept John Humphrey from getting the England caps that he deserved ?

It was good to read that his Palace transfer was not much of a success, as his heart was still at Charlton. Like you I too was in total shock.

Like you I too was in total shock. Worse than that (as if it could be worse than seeing a three time POTY playing for them) was that the fee was in lieu of rent due to Palace for playing at Selhurst. So we didn't even get the full amount!

It would be an interesting game if Lennie's 85-86 side could somehow play our side of today. There were some very good footballers in that old team - Bolder, Humphrey, Shirtliff, Walsh,Lee & Melrose are all better than their modern day counterparts.
I will admit that Diego Poyet is possibly a better player than Gritty.

Wonder what odds you'd get on Church scoring the NEXT hat trick for Charlton!! 500-1 maybe?

Didn't Andy Hunt get two hattricks in successive games? Stockport and someone else. Norwich maybe?

I read an interview with him in the Retro football mag Late Tackle and he said the season in the first division with us was his career highlight. Andy Jones came in as his replacement.
