Phillips, though hotly contested by the wanker from the other side. It was my first look see and I became intrigued that such a heated argument could escalate about who scored, when your team had just had a great victory.
Sadie might want to look that one up.

I can remember Mendonca and Lisbie both making hat tricks. That's going back a few years though.

Great find . I enjoyed watching that. I was in the Arthur Wait that day - my season ticket that season cost £54 What a great little striker Jimmy Melrose was - Lennie Lawrence at his best.

Make you right on that.Did George Shipley come from Lincoln aswell around the same time? He joined Charlton Athletic in July 1985 and was a regular member of the side who came runners-up in Division 2 in 1985–86, thus gaining promotion to the First Division. In 1986-87, Shipley managed to hang on to his place in the team who struggled to avoid relegation. He then joined Gillingham for the next two seasons, before returning to Lincoln City on a non-contract basis for a short period at the end of 1989

@ Vince & Paperboy
I think the Charlton side from 1985-89 was my all time favourite. Not just the likes of Thompson & Shipley - what about John Pender in the promotion season. I have seen an oil tanker turn faster. And John Pearson up front. Only scored one goal after promotion. Can you imagine a side as weak as that getting promoted to the top flight now?

Yep, Mark Reid was another great signing - £50k from Celtic ? What about Bob Bolder ? £20k from Liverpool. My favourite player from that era was Paul Miller - what a dirty animal of a player Sacked by Lennie for spitting.

Yeh,nasty piece of work!signed from Tottenham?Despite us playing not great football in a soulless craphole of a stadium those years do make me feel wistful when I think of some of the matches from those few seasons.Remember Bolders debut away to Man City,he made a real howler in a 2-1 defeat. Some of the fans were calling him Bob Blunder!!But he went to become a proper legend didn't he!

Our famous Selhurst promotion side, & what I think they cost: Nicky Johns - free from Millwall Mark Reid - 50k from Celtic John Humphery - free from Wolves ? George Shipley - free from Lincoln ? Peter Shirtliff - free from Sheff Wed John Pender - free from Sheff Wed Mark Stuart - Academy product Steve Gritt - got him off the Rag and Bone man Robert Lee - Academy product John Pearson - 50k from Sheff Wed Jim Melrose - 75k from Leicester ? Promoted to the top flight with that

I am sure Pender came from the Owls with Shirtliff (good player) and Pearson (not a good player). Flanagan was in and out of the team by then, can't remember him being in that side although the memory plays tricks.
Soon after we went up, Lennie "strengthened" (LOL) by signing Andy Peake & Colin Walsh, and Bob Bolder of course. Two of the three went on to be genuine Charlton legends. The year after that he signed Steve MacKenzie & Garth Crooks, followed by the likes of Colin Pates & Joe McLaughlin & Andy Jones (then our record signing, £350k from Port Vale).

Well that cant be right as Joe McLaughlin cost us over £600k and definitely was our record signing then and for quite a while afterwards.
