lans have been submitted for a fan zone at the Valley in Charlton. The application includes a tussle pitch for 3v3 football, 1 permanent kiosk, a permanent big screen, permanent seating, a temporary toilet and two temporary match-day kiosks on part of the car park. “This designated facility enables local children to come and play in a larger area, enhancing the Football club’s relationship with the local community.” The West Stand car park is not for public use. A total of 53 parking spaces are taken with the club stating “Any additional staff that may have previously used car parking spaces on specific matches, will now use public transport in an effort to become more ‘Green’ and mitigate against road parking”. The application can be viewed on Greenwich Council’s website by clicking here. www.fromthemurkydepths.co.uk/2024/08/08/charlton-athletic-fan-zone-plan-submitted-for-the-valley/

Quite like this. I think it's a valuable strategy to improve the match day experience. It's a shame we don't have much space to work with around the Valley.

My only issue with this is that with limited parking spaces for fans to use, with the new restrictions, those 53 spaces that have now gone may well be used by the staff that don't intend to use public transport to get to, and from, work on a Saturday.
So it's another way to generate cash for the club that causes more inconvenience for fans.
Or maybe I'm being too negative and cynical.

Have to disagree with you mate and the club certainly haven't created a fan zone to make money. The idea is to create a better matchday experience for everyone, especially the youngsters who are the club's future. To do this the club are using car parking space previously used by staff so they can hardly be accused of preventing fans from parking on the FanZone? Do you not think that giving up guaranteed revenue in order to enhance the day for supporters is giving and not taking? The FanZone cost money to create so it's a positive thing for me. Would fans rather that the club kept 30 car parking spaces for staff and hospitality guests than spending 100k on making fans happier? I think it's a good idea. What's not to like?

My point about the parking, though, was that the staff may well still drive and then park around the ground and then there will be fewer spaces for fans. However, I don’t disagree with you, I wasn’t as well informed.

I think parking around the ground in teh spaces available will always be on a first come. first derved basis so anyone can park in them to be honest. I read somewhere that matchday staff are being encouraged to use public transport.
Don't quote me on that but in the back of my mind I can recall reading something along those lines.

That’s correct it was on the press release for it - pushing for the club to be ‘greener’ by match day staff taking public transport.
