No mate didn't see him at all. Fleming was out in the technical area with NJ.

Perhaps what I'm most pleased about is that we didn't sit back after we scored but continued to close down and press.

Genuinely thrilled with this. Great result at a ground we have often struggled with. My feeling is we still need a bit of quality on the pitch, but that is a great way to start the campaign. Our first away win of the season like last term comes at Wigan, but this year its come a lot sooner. COYA

Thelo Aasgaard needs to be playing at a better level. Would love to sign him.

Very good workman like performance still A few things not quite right but I think Godden will read Ahadme better than Campbell … defensively excellent don’t seem right to pick one person out but I will Edwards outstanding performance.. 3 points great start .. Fooking hell, I agree with Bexley. Same 😂 miracles do exist

Always look forward to reading the views of fans on here, hoping for positive reports later after a win,but this is football after all. Safe travels to all Addicks attending. COYA!!! We were misssing a combative, box-to-box attacking midfiedler, one who can advance up the pitch and take a pot shot if other options are limited. It's been my main focus over the last two weeks and lacking one has never been more evident as it was today. Wigan were poor, so were we. Solid in defence but going forward we just weren't at it. I didn't get Docherty's advance position when the ball rarely reached that high up the pitch. Ahadme had little service and there is no way we will get the best out of him playing on the break, that's not his game. Miles and Godden coming back can't happen quick enough. TC is lost as a replacement, I just don't get the smoke blowing up his arse, he flatters to decieve. We are crying out for a player to give us the intensity to drive us forward to the wing backs are advanced enough to get involved. That didn't happen today and it it won't unless the dynamics are right. Coventry played well, Anderson did his job but Doc just wasn't involved enough for me just like TC. Wigan were poor, we weren't much better offensively so let's not go overboard. Lots to do between now and the end of the window. Still need 2 or 3 but a CAM is absolutely paramount because we totally lacked this afternoon. The entire back line and Mannion were very reassuring. MotM was Josh Edwards,a quality defender, what a signing. Agree with this assessment, Godden can’t come back quick enough in my opinion….CAM a must……hopefully Jones can see this….just hope all the quality options haven’t already gone to our competition…. Our wingbacks were excellent defensively but neither rarely got past the half way line and they are supposedly going to be our main source of creativity…. Wigan played some decent one touch football but lacked prescence up top, out three CB’s never looked like losing a header or tackle which was great to see The key point of the game for me was when they hooked off Aimson who was really impressive alongside Kerr and brought on another CB who looked like he had mistakes all over him….ultimately which he did for for Jones goal….

If he is part of our season I can see the Scots lad dropping into the left side of the back three although Gillespie’s passing ability will keep him in contention.

Excellent result and the kind of performance we might need to come to expect and accept. Jones was always going to make us difficult to play against and to beat, but the problem was always going to be a possible lack of creativity. Jones appears to have little interest in ‘looking after the ball’ or playing ‘football’.
We looked very solid yesterday. What can be very effective with a 3-5-2/5-3-2 system is its inherent flexibility. It can be either a very defensive or a more attack minded set up and yesterday we saw the defensive version with Ramsey (who is beginning to look an outstanding signing) and Edwards both playing primarily as defenders. It will be interesting to see whether on a different day, against different opposition or in a different game state they will be deployed further forwards and whether Small then gets the nod over Edwards. When we’re in this more attacking mode the back three will be more exposed than they were at Wigan.
I suspect that both Coventry and Anderson did exactly what Doctor Jones ordered yesterday and I felt both looked more comfortable in their respective roles than at times they did last season. Docherty didn’t really impose himself and is yet to impress.
It’s going to be very hard work for whoever plays up front, both literally and figuratively. I’ve no doubt Ahadme will testify to this, but beyond his very obvious endeavour I’ve not been especially impressed. It’s possible that one of the keys to our season will be whether Leaburn, when he returns, has the energy and athleticism to match Ahadme. If he does, he’ll offer a lot more I suspect and might help materially improve our creativity and goal threat.
Our two home games against Orient and Bolton might tell us a lot more about whether we’re going to have the ability to score the goals we’ll need to challenge at the top end of the table.

A solid away performance, generally tight in defence and tidy in midfield. Front two had a hard time but did what you’d expect from them both. Apart from a couple of occasions Wigan rarely troubled Mannion and Edwards just shaded MOM from Mitchell, bandaged like a Katie Price tribute act. I can see why some posters say we need more creativity in midfield - something for NJ to work on no doubt. Bloody fuming the Sky coverage cut out with five minutes to go. I hope that doesn’t happen every game. I didnt see the game today... was at Headingly watching the Rhino's smash up Wigan with my son and his girlfriend. However, having watched the highlights, what I saw was work rate, solidity, competent defending and basically winning ugly. This is the Charlton that I love. A lot has been mentioned about signing the mecurial number 10 that will unlock defences.... we still have a few weeks to go before the end of the window and there's always January. I think the legendary Lennin Lawrence said that you need to get the basics in place and then add the start dust, and I think that NJ has started that way. I dont care if its ugly football, but we win... George Graham did the same at Millwall and Arsenal..... 3 points is a great way to start the season Ahh.... Lennin Lawrence, he had us russian around😇. Sorry AC, couldn’t resist! Have a nice day, COYA👍🏻.

Lloyd Jones player of the year. You heard it here first! Always thought there was a player there! Hopefully we’ll see a consistent back three and we can build on that.

If we could put a player on the pitch with Edwards' defending abilities and Small's attacking prowess we would have a 5m wing back on our hands. Edwards looked excellent yesterday, that diving header clearance was superbly timed and signs of a very good player who knows what's going on around him. He read that phase of play like a player beyond his years and experience. Small isn't injured, he's raring to go but our wide men just didn't press yesterday as Wigan nullified that threat. Up front was a bit of a concern though. Doc was out of position for me and hardly involved as we didn't have the ball in the final third enough. Ahadme almost played a loan role being asked to get on the end of bits and pieces when heavily marked. His strengths are getting his head onto crosses, he scored so many headers, last season, and he's also strong with his back to goal holding up play until our attacking players arrived on the scene which again rarely occurred and when it did we didn't get enough numbers in the box. We seemed almost reluctant to commit bodies forward at times but I'm taking that as being part of an away team performance. I'm sure at home we'll be more attacking minded but we do need that CAM we are missing. That's key to how we do this season. I just wish Scott Fraser would wake up one morning this week and be the player we signed again. It's a shame that he's such a busted flush, such a waste. Defensively we are sound. Best back 4 or 5 for many a season and I like Mannion's presence too. Come on Charlton we are one or two short. Fix it and we are top six.

It looked like it was a case of away team setup with Edwards defending solidly. Would imagine Small would be more of a threat at home when we did see more of the ball and be on the front foot more! Jones said previously that it is a long season and he will have to utilise the squad. He said in the London News Online after yesterday “We know we’re not going to dominate every game. The Valley is going to be big for us, but we’ve got to make sure when we are away from home, we are picking up points and wins. We’re going to come up against some well coached sides who will cause us problems."

I think a shout out for Mannion is also required…..He goes about his business with the minimum of fuss which is the trait of a decent keeper
First noticed him against us up at Cambridge late last season where he basically won them a point on the day….and I think that would have sparked Jones interest in him and no surprises why
His distribution was really good yesterday, he looks imposing between the sticks which is something we have been missing for a while now…..I don’t think the hunt for a number one should be our major priority……a more creative midfielder and defensive cover in Potts should be our next recruits

Whilst we’re suggesting where we need to be stronger, I’d like to think that targeted coaching will also play a part… don’t write players off to early… NJ should be doing this as a given… IMO…

I think we'll set up a certain way away from home huddy1978 to be honest like we did yesterday. At home I think we'll be far more attacking which might mean change of personnal. I don't see how you can change that defensive unit though based on yesterday. Possibly Edwards and Small to rotate but that's about it. Pointless changing something that doesn't need changing.

It just might be me but I prefer players coming in who are experienced and have statistics to back that up. Coaching youngsters along the way is fine by me but on the job, I'm not so keen on.

I thought Ramsey was superb, really like the look of him, he looks the real deal as was Edwards, particularly with that header to stop a certain goal. When was the last time we can honestly say that we had 2 decent full/wing backs? What I liked was that everyone but the defenders in particular, were all very active, very aggressive, energetic and looked motivated.

Not sure how Maloney can say that after one game and especially as we didn't offer much going forward.
Perhaps he means we'll go close as our defensive unit will make us hard to breakdown.

Very strange comments for me when we didn’t create much at all. Louis Mendes pointed out that it’s a pretty standard response from opposition managers to big up the other teams and I think this is very much the case.

Delighted with the win. Makes the team selection for tomorrow Interesting because players will hopefully want to show they are worthy of regular selection. I feel sure Maynard Brewer will play, and feel that Zach Mitchell might start. Don’t know what Nathan Jones will do, but I am looking forward to being at the game.
