Charlton continued their pre-season preparations with a behind-closed-doors training game against Millwall on Tuesday.
George Saville and Aidomo Emakhu both scored for the Sky Bet Championship side, who ran out 2-0 victors at their Calmont Road training ground.
Manager Nathan Jones said: “There were lots and lots of positives. I saw the work come out - real good physical work. We conceded by giving two sloppy balls away which is the thing we have to eradicate. We give the ball away and then they break and score two from shots. Apart from that, we controlled the game in lots of ways.
“It was a good workout against a perennial Championship side. There’s so much structure and but for a bit more quality in the final third, it would have been a better result for us."
Image ' “We more than competed with them physically in terms of everything, so it shows we’re in a good place," the gaffer continued. "We haven’t kept many clean sheets and that has to change. It’s about doing the basics over a 90-minute period and that’s what we have to improve. Structurally we were good and physically we were good; we just need to add a little bit more quality and then be a little bit better doing the basics.
“I’m disappointed with the result because we’re better than the result showed. But, one, you’ve got to score goals and, two, you’ve got to keep them out at the other end. I am generally pleased; these are a Championship side so it shows we’re competing there, but I want us to get better.
"No one has reported any injuries - that's the most important thing really and then you're looking for the physical workout, which we got. Then you're looking for the result, so two out of three ain't bad

Aneke limped out of the game, what a surprise. I think you will now see Danny Hylton being given a short term contract.

I sincerely hope not…..so we would then have two first choice strikers, an academy kid and a 35 year old who looks fit enough to play 10 minutes as back ups…….thats not the forward thinking of a club looking to compete for promotion IMO…..

If I am honest I take the injury updates that come out of the club with a huge pinch of salt…..I am still highly sceptical of the Fraser and REG identical thigh injuries that came about through the Slovenia trip….

Sounds like we’ve given away two Mickey Mouse goals, as we did last year. Did anyone see the game or know what the teams were, or any feedback?

Sounds like we’ve given away two Mickey Mouse goals, as we did last year. Did anyone see the game or know what the teams were, or any feedback? It was all very hush hush, no viewing at all, no team news, game broken down into 3 x 30 minutes segments….. Jones not happy with us giving a couple of sloppy passes away which resulted in them scoring twice…. Reading their website it looked like they had plenty of other chances to score so NJ might have been putting a bit of positive spin on it…. Preseason games like this at this level are so much better than the likes of Dartford, it will re-emphasise to Jones on what is still needed……We have released two CB’s in the summer who were part of a Charlton defence as bad as we can remember and only brought in Mitchell…..There lies one key area in need of quality recruitment required……We have two first choice centre forwards, an academy kid, Aneke who we simply can’t rely upon fitness wise and a 35 year old on trial seemingly only capable of running around for 10 mins…… We are also lacking a number 10 capable of scoring goals when our competitors are circling like sharks around the likes of Dembele and Mcatee when we should be head first in that hunt…..IMO You can’t be doom and gloom over a kick about on a training ground, even if it was our local rivals…..no injuries are the priority….and a quick reset on the extra quality we need to bring in……

Ok let’s split the difference, he may have had a dead leg or something that they didn’t want to take any risks on, different sources say he came off limping but it could be a very minor knock that wasn’t deemed to be worth reporting on…….

“But, one, you’ve got to score goals and, two, you’ve got to keep them out at the other end.” No shit, Sherlock (sorry, Nathan). Wow, with astute comments like that (right out of the Gareth Southgate book of England failure quotes), you lot had better watch out the FA don’t poach Jones from you to be the next England manager. 🤣 Glad two of our players got on the score sheet after a disappointing 0-0 against the Gills on Saturday. Only disappointment is that Langstaff didn’t get off the mark. Please beat Crippled Alice on Friday.

The Millwall fan says it all.Finding positives out of a 2-0 defeat. Like, we competed with them physically .Thats only part of it .We are not a rugby team. FFS. Add to Southgate[s excuses, we are too familiar with those of Atkins Holden and Apples to be suprised. He says i hope we beat Palce on Friday-Larf What with, as it stands .And the Gills got a point that we didn't
Its only friendly cick around you might say, but reading between the lines, NJ was to have the nucleus of a competitive team ,up and running by the end of June.Into the middle of July and it is nothing of the sort.
It is a wake up call. to replace a 20 plus goal scorer in Alfie May who was ready to fight for the badge every week, without injury. Lets hope and like NJ, pray that those missing players that are quite evident, are here soon, or else its another mediocre season for us Sorry to start the gloom and doom so early. But i am a realist, and have seen too many false dawns over the decades .This is Charlton Athletic FFS

Chuks replaced him 10mins into 2nd 30min. Then came off for the last 30, when the whole team got replaced. Nobody was injured or limping. To say though I think we looked good. Either we look a good side or Millwall look very very poor. Take the goals out we edge it 55/45. They had two shots and scored both, we look like we have a way of playing and a style with combinations beginning when using the ball. Don’t look into the score, we were the better side Mannion A.Mitchell Jones Gillesphey Asiiimwe Edwards Coventry Doherty Berry Hilton (aneke br]Godden Maynard brewer Watson Z.mitchell Ramsay Edun Small Taylor Anderson Bishop Campbell Kanu

I totally disagree that we have not got a nucleus of a competitive team, to me we have brought in 7 decent new players, our midfield has been strengthened and we now have two strikers up top with physicality and goals in them, as well as us recruiting with one of league ones best defenders last year…….. Judging by a poster who has actually seen the game we were the better side but they were more clinical on the day…..that happens when you have players playing in a league above…..but for you to say sorry to start the doom and gloom at this stage is a very interesting comment…. My only observation at this stage is our lack of quality in depth which I am sure NJ will sort out, I certainly don’t have concerns about the nucleus of the current squad….we are only 2-3 away from being a decent side IMO…..

Must say the Ness situation is odd… wasn’t in Slovenia and wasn’t there yesterday, seems to have been frozen out. Zach Mitchell again looked very accomplished yesterday though and I would much rather have him with a squad place than ness

Also if this is right then I just can’t see how we would have lined up in the final 30 so wouldn’t count the final 30 too much. So overall 1-0 with what looks to be a more likely starting lineup in the first 60 isn’t too bad but I don’t read into friendlies too much.

An area that we really need to recruit in as a priority……We released two CB’s in the summer clearly not fancied by NJ but were still picked at times ahead of Gillesphey and REG last season, a season where our defence was the worst we have witnessed in many years..…….and have just brought in Alex Mitchell,

Was Chris there or is he basing his comments on a video which shows very little? I think you can tell by NJ’s voice in the background that he wasn’t pleased with the ball being played into feet in an area which hurt us…..His comment after the game was he was frustrated that two soft passes gave away two goals…….says it all really…..
