We all know about Leverkusen on here, an amazing achievement as is little Girona's remarkable qualification for the Champions League next season having finished in 3rd place in La Liga, but who else has stunned Europe this season but gone under the radar because of the two clubs I have named above.
Firstly little old Bologna, currently third in the table and level on points with Juventus who they drew 3-3 last weekend after being 3-0 up, have also qualified for the Champions League for the first time, as have Brest, a tiny club from the North-West of France who had to win at Toulouse last weekend, which they did 3-0 and then hope that Lille failed to beat Nice. With 90 minutes on the clock Lille led 2-1 but then on 90+3 Jordan Lotomba stunned the hosts when equalising to make it 2-2 which leaves Lille having to go through the playoffs to have any chance of qualifying.
Back in Germany, they still use the old play-off system over there, the same system we used when we beat Leeds all those years ago at St. Andrews. Union Berlin clinched survival on the final day of the season last Saturday with a late win over Freiburg, while Bochum slumped to 4-1 loss at Werder Bremen which confined them to third bottom and a last fight for survival against one of Germany's famous old clubs, Fortuna Dussledorf who finished 3rd behind St Pauli and Holsten Kiel in Bundesliga II to become Bochum's play-off opponents and it was Dussledorf who put in a stunning away performance tonight to win 3-0 and in doing so must surely have one foot back in the top tier for the first time since 2000.
