Nothing has changed really. He's with us next season unless we hear otherwise.

I hope he stays. He really has a bit of oomph about him, as well as being a unit. He is one I would be upset if left..

My best guess is that he wasn't willing to commit to a three year deal with us then.

Remember we will still get a fee for him even if he leaves next summer.
Because he's aged under 24 and we've offered him a longer contract (whether he signs it or not) any club signing him as an out of contract player will have to agree a compensation fee with us (or leave it to a tribunal to set the fee).
The better a season he has the more he'll be worth, so there's no reason to look to sell him before then, no matter whether he signs a longer deal or not.

My best guess is that he wasn't willing to commit to a three year deal with us then. I would very much doubt that this would happen as he has bounced about between quite a few clubs already and he is only 19….His agent has history of moving him around I always thought the best we would get would be 18 months out of him…..

I didn't see him signing an extension before we triggered his extra year. I imagine he'll leave it a while yet to see what offers are around or if we are willing to offer more.

Quick recap on Small's career:
At age 16 he was playing for Everton in the FA Cup.
At age 17 (with the football press calling him the best left-sided U18 in the country) Everton turned down a £1.5m bid from Southampton. Saints ended up (via tribunal) paying £3m for him.
At age 18 Southampton turned down a £1m bid from Spurs for him.
At age 19 he found himself playing for a relegation-battling third division side.
It’s quite the career so far, so who can really predict what will happen next!

It’s quite the career so far, so who can really predict what will happen next! Nobody can predict how his next 20 games will go, nor who we acquire and how we play in our first 20 games. If we secure two points per game by November then players may decide we are serious contenders for promotion and sign up for longer. It's that simple!

I think this is a win/win for the club - interested to see how this plays out.
I think his got potential but nowhere near the player yet - I think a year with us will do his career the world of good but money talks

So he wasn’t interested in signing a long term one then. Smashing. The quote was “If that doesn’t happen (a new long-term deal) by the time we need to activate the option then we will activate it and continue those negotiations." So we have him for a year and will talk about longer. Good job we have the year extension in there then!

No loyalty in football and like I said with Campbell, I think that should work both ways.

Wouldn't that defeat the point of signing a contract with a 1 year extension clause in it though? I'm sure he had plenty of options other than us when he first signed.

Small is an excellent player for this level and I'm really glad we have him signed for another year, but that doesn't mean for one second we will keep him if a decent offer comes in.
Ok we offered him a longer contract and so far he hasn't signed it. Doesn't mean he won't, doesn't mean he will. He's only young and if a big club comes in he might be very tempted to go. But it does annoy me (not that it has happened yet in this instance so not digging him out), that we took a chance on someone, gave them a contract when no one else would and because he's caught the eye he is potentially already thinking of his next step, rather than showing a little loyalty to the club who gave him a chance. CBT was a bit the same when we first signed him. No one really showed any interest until we gave him a chance, he started to show what he could do and then there was that uncertainty before he eventually signed. This might totally not be the case with Small and he may well want to stay but his agent might be trying to get him better now people have seen what he is capable of.
Maybe he wants a better contract, maybe he wants a shorter one so he's not tied down to us. Maybe he wants to see where we are next year. None of us know for sure. I just hope if he does stay with us, he carries on playing like he did last year, because he is a talent.

There is no loyalty in football, none at all……..players kissing the badge when they score is f…….g embarrassing…….Ultimately is all about the Deutschmarks both what the agent can get and what the player can get especially as a 19 year old setting himself up financially for life…

The club does have form for low balling players so it might be possible that his Agent has secured, verbally, a much better offer.

Also, didn't a recent 'hand out' from the Premier League fix the maximum payment for a young player at about £625k?

You still get a fee if a player goes overseas but FIFA decide the amount (if the clubs can't agree) and they tend to set much lower amounts that the tribunals for deals within England. For example we only got £300k when Joe Aribo moved to Rangers as a free agent, whereas we were expected to get £1m+ if he had moved to an English club.
