I've been quite impressed with Small since he's been playing, have to say I prefer him to Edun, Small gets up and down that flank alot better than Edun, he's better defensively and attacks the full back better and He's a better all rounded Wing Back in my opinion. I'd be happy to see his contract extended at the end of the season providing he keeps up his form, I think he's only going to get better as the games roll on and he's only 19/20 right?

Totally agree, I think he's much better than Edun, and will only get better if he stays fit. If we can get Ramsay fit on the other side, I think the future is bright.

I think his birth certificate doctored...🤣🤣 19 years old 😱.. He looks a real talent to me.. Yes as a 16/17 year old he was on the radar of top top clubs such as Barca, Arsenal amongst others and you can see that he has the raw materials. A decent length contract extension could be a very profitable piece of business in time to come.

He seems quite good at the aspects of the game, that you normally associate with seasoned pros.... I have enjoyed watching him...

Should have done a longer term contract from the outset in retrospect.
He was regarded as the best left-sided teenage defender in the country three years ago.
Signed by Southampton for £3m-£5m (different figures from different sources) two years ago after being Everton's youngest debutant ever.
Saints turned down a £800k-ish bid from Spurs a year before releasing him to sign for us on a free.
He increasingly looks like one of those players who had lost his way until finding a manager who finally gets, appreciates and uses him correctly.
Fair play to Jones, Small and all who got this deal over the line in the first place x

I’m sure I read that he had a six month contract with another year option. That gives us next season and if he looks good we can worry about keeping him then.

Great performance second half especially. Hes still raw and his touch is off at times. Could be match fitness (not sure how much he’s played this year) and/or the pitches we play on!
Really promising signs though I agree

Incredible fitness, if he had hardly played any football before joining us, and now played, what is it 4 games on the bounce?, and close to being mam of the match in all of them.. Such a talent..

As I've said before, it's not necessarily a surprise that Everton's youngest ever first team debutant, who Southampton ended up paying £3m-£5m for 2.5 years ago (whilst the likes of Bayern and Man Utd were also sniffing around) is a good player.
What's weird is how his loans in the meantime (at Port Vale and St Mirren) have been so uninspiring. NJ was at Saints with Small and obviously knows how to get the best from him as we can now see - hopefully Thierry will reciprocate if offered a longer contract.
Normally these rare talents (for example, Gallagher and Rak-Sayki) are only with us on loan. This feels like a similar exciting PL-level youngster, but one who we somehow 'own' (at least for another season) rather than just have a brief borrow of.

What I liked about him in both the Derby and Cheltenham wins was his body language in the celebrations. Looked like he really cared about the wins.

We have to offer him a deal for next season. He's worth every penny.

He’s been a revelation. Very athletic. Strong. Quick. Very positive. And no little skill. We may have got very lucky with him. I can’t help but worry that there must be something “wrong” with him given his failed loans and Southampton’s decision to cut him loose, but perhaps something has just clicked for him?
There was a moment in the first half at Cheltenham when we were very well placed on the counter with Coventry in possession when he ran recklessly offside, leading Coventry to delay his release and then lose possession, but we’ve seen very little evidence of the rawness we’d all expected.
The signing of Small highlights how sometimes it pays to take a risk. There isn’t much downside, but the player does need to be given game time. Blackett Taylor is another example. Having started in Villa’s academy, he found himself without a contract at the end of July ‘21 and, just like Small, we initially only offered him a short term deal. Blackett Taylor then improved significantly while he was with us.
Let’s hope we can find more such players, recognising that not all of them will come off.
