If Kirk does go it will tell us exactly where we are at under the Goon. He was willing to spend 500k on the lad last year so if we sell him the money should go straight back into the squad right because the initial outlay was part of the budget. If he gets that back and does not spend anything then we know, not that we don't already, that in the space of 12 months the fella is potless. I'd rather lose DJ than Kirk. Even then seemingly ITK types on the Swindon forum reckon we paid close to a million for DJ. I find that hard to believe but maybe 500k so similar to Kirk re needing at least some reinvestment from TS if he is sold. Personally I would be happy with: 1. McKirdy in exchange for DJ and say 100k. 2. Rak-Sakyi on loan from Palace. 3. A left-sided defender on a permanent. ...with one or two CMs (from JFC, Morgan, Gilbey) out... ...and one or two loans in to cover any potential gaps (primarily a CB/CM utility player). I think we'd look pretty good re challenging for Top Six with the above tbh.

We have signed five players from a lower division, all of them in areas where we already had cover, leading to JFC, a Championship regular being shuffled towards the door. We still have no LCB, LB, and CW and Davison not replaced (and we were already light on forwards). Our last match had a 6'5" youth striker as a sub right winger. This is not joined up thinking. We've signed a new GK because our number 1 last season is average at this level. Garner knows he can play in his style as he managed him last season. Two full backs have come in to replace those that have left. They're both more attacking than Matthews, Gunter and Purrington so fit the system. We signed a CB to replace two who have gone. He's known for being comfortable playing out from the back, the type of CB we didn't have. I also expect it's a position we're looking to make another signing given we only have three senior players. Leaburn scored partly because he was marked by Accrington's left back. In this system we need one of the wide players to be a goalscorer rather than a traditional winger, as McKirdy was at Swindon. JFC played 11 times in the Championship in a side that got relegated, he wasn't a regular. We've strengthened in central midfield so will likely let one or two move on. I can see us being strong in CM even if we let JFC go which can only be a positive. Garner's said he wants more signings so of course we're going to have some gaps in the squad at this stage. Most clubs in the division will be making further signings. It would be unusual if we didn't need to. We know we're after Rak-Sakyi to improve out wide options. I hope we're after a striker too and won't be happy if we don't bring one in. With Stockley as captain if a striker comes in they'll be a squad player, probably someone who can also play out wide. I'm not convinced it'll prove successful as it's a very competitive division, but a lack of joined up thinking isn't the issue.

The whole point is that we couldn’t afford to be like “other clubs” this Summer. We had just had our worst league finish in nearly 100 years. We should have identified targets and got our business done early. Ipswich were quickly off the mark to secure Ladapo, who was just the type of statement signing striker we needed. No disrespect to Miles Leaburn but he’s a raw 18 year old kid, this isn’t his time yet. The reason we can’t tie players down in the main is due to a lack of budget.

Rushed back) is the same type of keeper but without the flapping at crosses. We have two right footed full backs Egbo unproven. A CB from Rochdale has replaced Lavelle who we paid money for. We needed a LCB not a RCB, where we have Ness and Elewere who are better than O'Connor. JFK played 91 games in the Championship for various sides but has been replaced by midfielders from a lower division. I think Miles will be a big hit, but not at right wing. He scored in the box.

Garner arrived what, a few weeks ago, perhaps two months? In that time he has watched last season on video, appraised the squad, made some additions and set out the stall at two league games. Which most of us have watched. Most importantly, he has introduced a new 4-3-3 system. Think we are fortunate to be on four points but these things even out over a season. What we can say is that signings such as Wollacott and Sessegnon plus Leaburn from the Academy have hit the ground running. And that a consensus is emerging that we have known weaknesses in O'Connell, McGrandles and Stockley. Not to write these three off after just two league games. JFC and Gilbey simply not featuring - perhaps these two need to go while we bring in another left sided centre back and A.N.Other? Also, most would agree that we play well in one half but poor in the other. Now that's hard to pin down and where we need Garner to resolve their approach. Else sooner or later we will be taken apart and confidence will suffer. Much is made of budgets - we certainly have a top six playing budget. And we have been underperforming that for two seasons. What we know is that if the last couple of players are EPL loans then their loan fees and share of contract are not cheap. But what a difference two decent additions could make?! As for Stockley? Here's hoping Leaburn continues to grow in stature and experience. We ain't going to sign a star striker at this stage but Leaburn could well see more and more minutes... eventually challenging Stockley for a starting slot? Who knows? And still eight games to go before we can really judge this side.

I do like your posts SR but I have serious doubts about your comment that we have a top 6 budget, what makes you think this? because TS told us this?……Didn’t Louis Mendez seriously question this when Garner told him at his presser on Friday that we couldn’t compete financially with the top clubs in this league…..I think I could guess more than 5 clubs with a bigger budget than ours IMO……and this will certainly tell come next May, we simply don’t have the strength in depth to be competing for the top 6-8 over 46 games…..I think there are plenty of better squads than us in this league and I also think the standard in league one this season will be the best ever……..Just my opinion for what it’s worth…..

I haven’t seen enough of AMB to judge him but Wollacott looks a good signing so far. Nothing unusual about having two right footed full backs. Proven in the eyes of fans means little - Gunter, Watson etc were proven but amongst our worst players last season. We needed a new CB, logically it makes sense to aim to improve on what you have rather than bring in cover. Let’s see where JFC ends up, I’ll be surprised if it’s as a regular in the Championship. In a front three the wide players need to get in the box and contribute with goals, Leaburn and CBT both scoring from the right wing is a decent start.

I disagreed with the claim there has been no joined up thinking, I wasn’t justifying the size of our budget and the impact of that. I can see improvements on last year in terms of a plan, but it’s not blown me away, I need more convincing it’ll be enough for a genuine promotion challenge. The last few weeks of the window will be interesting, those signings can make a big difference - Powell had it with Yann and Cort, Bowyer with Cullen and Bielik, none of which we paid a fee for. It’s the reality of the market at this level, there won’t be many examples of successful clubs having all their signings in early. I’m not interested in making excuses for TS, if he’s as skint as suggested he won’t be here much longer. Even if that’s not completely true I also don’t see funding L1 football (or worse) for years on end.

I’m feeling very schizophrenic right now. I didn’t watch the game yesterday, but I’m very encouraged by what I’ve heard. We seem to have built on Tuesday’s improvement and begun to look much more like the side Ben Garner says he wants us to be. That’s a big positive after what I felt was a very disjointed performance against Derby.
Sandgaard keeps telling us we had a top three wage budget last season and that we’ll be top four this. That suggests we were badly let down by poor coaching last season, which was my take at the time for what it’s worth, but it also implies that with better coaching we ought to perform at least in line with our wage bill this season.
So far so good, you might think, but the bookies are no mugs. Nor do they make emotional judgments and yet they seem not to rate us at all. In round numbers they seem to believe we have no better than a 25% chance of finishing in the top six and around a 40% chance of finishing in the bottom half. That’s a damning assessment, especially if Sandgaard is right about our wage bill.
While we began to look the part yesterday, the result was obviously disappointing and a worrying pattern is beginning to emerge that we lack a cutting edge and aren’t capable of creating chances. Our Xg yesterday was just 0.82, based on xG Data’s data and, adjusting for the distortion of Blackett Taylor’s open goal against Derby, we did little better in our two previous league matches.
That’s obviously a problem and a source of frustration given that many of us have had major reservations about Stockley’s suitability for Garner’s game plan. Indeed, in their different ways there are doubts about each of the three that played upfront yesterday. Blackett Taylor is s genuine flyer and potentially devastating, but he appears lack poise and game awareness.
Based on his videos, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi plays on the right as an inverted winger so if he is going to play Taylor will either miss out or move to the left. I’m inclined to think that we need to sign at least two forwards, while beginning to pray that Aneke can stay fit. The club may need to be bold and gamble. If we need to sell Kirk and Stockley, so be it. I wouldn’t spend a penny on another defender until we’ve addressed the weakness in the front three. What would be the point?

I know many on here decry the signing of ex-players, but Tarique Fosu played one game for Brentford last season and hasn't a squad number this. Would suit 4-3-3 much better than as a winger, and might be available for a nominal fee or certainly loan. Still only 26 and in last year of contract. Maybe not Prem quality but deffo L1 and I think Bees black box is better than ours. I’ve always rated Fosu, but like many of our skilful players he suffered under Lee Bowyer’s blinkered and inflexible style of management. At his best he’d be a good signing and potentially ideally suited to playing on the left of our front three. With Rak-Sakyi on the right we’d be much more threatening. However, it’s not clear what’s going on with him. He appears to have been side-lined by Brentford so that he’s now in limbo. Reports suggested he was on his way to Strasbourg in Ligue One, but that seems to have fallen through. He’s had some injury problems I believe, but it’s also possible he’s hard to manage. As I’ve already said, I think he’d be a good signing, but I can’t see him wanting to return.

I like Fosu, but I don't think we need another wide man unless one of the current four leaves. I think that’s probably right. The problem is that both Blackett Taylor and Rak-Sakyi appear to prefer to play on the right. On the other hand, on the left, neither Kirk nor Jaiyesimi, who to his credit can play on both the right and the left, appear to be good enough. Garner has two problems to solve upfront; who plays centrally and who plays on the left. As I’ve already said, I don’t think Fosu would sign for us, but if he did he’d likely be a much better bet than Kirk or DJ.

Ffs... It's very frustrating being a Charlton fan. We're finally a few pieces away from a cracking squad and this is the season the river runs dry. I'm a big fan of sustainability but spending £400k to complete the puzzle in one window isn't a huge issue in the grand scheme. We threw multiple 000k's at Aneke, Fraser, Kirk etc when we had a naff squad around them, now we have a striker who hasn't looked like scoring at all in three games and we decide we're good up top. It’s not just bloody frustrating, it’s unacceptable. Garner sounds pissed off there, & I don’t blame him. Let’s look at the striking options he mentions - Stockley - patently doesn’t suit his system. Aneke - a laughing stock of a footballer Leaburn - a raw kid, played fewer than 10 games. Ands that’s it. We all know, having seen our first three games, that this won’t be enough in terms of scoring the goals to get us out of mid table. Where’s the money gone Sandgaard? Think it's worth revisiting this after the next two home games, and again after ten. Garner is managing expectations and it's been clear for a while that no additional striker was coming in. Just as it's clear that JFC and Gilbey are surplus to requirements. As posted elsewhere that leaves us looking at a false 9 and/or Aneke for goals. Let's watch the team and game management now that Rak-Sakyi is set to make his debut. We really should pay attention to the whole of the front six, and not just Stockley.

Very disappointed with this news. It is obvious to everybody, including Stevie Wonder, that we need a striker. It should have been targeted at the beginning of the window. Equally, it's obvious that because another striker didn't arrive in July, the options were always going to be Stockley, Aneke and Leaburn. Perhaps Rak-Sakyi can play centrally? The pressure is now on Garner to deliver a side that creates real chances.

Don’t be daft Kevin , even David Blunkett & Peters and Lee can tell after 3 league games we haven’t got the fire power. We don’t need to wait “10 league games” to know that Aneke will spend another season on his arse in the treatment room. This is a shite owner pulling the wool over fan’s eyes.

Let's watch the team and game management now that Rak-Sakyi is set to make his debut. We really should pay attention to the whole of the front six, and not just Stockley. No wool over my eyes. Watch the next two home games. And if we fail to win at least one, then watch the crowd share their views! Put another way, take the 15 who played in the first three games then add Rak-Sakyi and Aneke as options. Plus these next two opponents are weaker than Derby and Wednesday.

Cant see no striker coming in ts thinks we have 4 strikers just look on os site Jesurun Rak-Sakyi must off been brought in to be a striker as on os hes down as one I did comment on this when he was announced on twitter as a striker. I wondered then if that was it. Someone claiming to be ‘ITK’ had said we won’t be signing a striker without someone leaving, which seems to be what’s said here. I feel like this article is suggesting we’re open to offers. To see if anything comes about.

After a few decades following CAFC, there are two reasons we should rarely go all out attacking our club and our side. First off, it's our club and there are 23 others in our division who want to attack us plus Palace and Millwall fans taking the piss. Second off, directors, staff and players all really care about performances and results. And we can always be magnanimous about shortcomings - but the fact is that CAFC simply ain't predictable. In short the SMT try to do something every season. And when they fail, somebody takes the blame. Last season it was Adkins, Roddy and finally Jackson. Let's take another look at this squad and tactics on Sunday after five games - not just tonight, but also not a narrow defeat vs Wednesday. No idea if Aneke has a part to play but if he does then we could be in a very good place soon enough.

Think he's been dealt a rough hand, I know we've brought in some real talent but I do believe he has a part to play. He's tidy on the ball and has some good driving runs. Individual effort doesn't seem to be our bag though, all about bringing your team mates onto the ball. Totally agree, almost feels like we are pushing the lad out of the door when there should be others in front of him. It appears harsh but we should recall that there's a new manager in situ for just a few months who has taken training, signed a few, reviewed all last season videos & stats. And then made decisions about who makes the cut. Whilst Gilbey and JFC not required, Garner has made Dobson and Morgan two of the first names on the team sheet. The addition of Rak-Sakyi the other night has shown us all how Garner is setting us up. Which in turn places doubts against CBT and Jaiyesimi! Along with moving a couple on, it appears we have some of our first XI out of contract next summer. Best to see how we do on Saturday but of the 15/16 most utilised players, around half were here last season. To be precise we have a new keeper, O'Connell and new full backs as well as Kirk fully assimilated AND the introduction of Leaburn and Rak-Sakyi, along with Payne and McGrandles in midfield (from the bench). Whilst all of our full backs left last May to be replaced by Clare, Sessegnon and Clayden (plus the injured Egbo), the rest of the side is a blend between old and new.

It’s still possible that the cavalry will appear on the horizon as the sun is beginning to set on September 1st, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely. If it does, it seems much more likely it will be of the Josh Parker or David Davis ilk than Josh Cullen or Krystian Bielik.
Ben Garner has been telling us he needs to move players on before he can strengthen his squad and therein lies the problem. The most damning indictment of the Sandgaard era so far is that despite his stated intention to profit from player trading he’s not yet signed a single player who is in high demand elsewhere. Nobody wants us to sell our best players, but if doing so produces windfall gains it can help the funding position significantly.
If anyone doubts the importance of this, it’s worth considering that since he bought the club just less than two years ago Sandgaard has received around £10m in transfer income. That’s £10m either received in cash or due. All of that money is in respect of players who were either already at the club when he arrived or who had already been sold. Where is £10m going to come from over the next two years? That’s a question Sandgaard will be asking Martin as nauseam.
Our best hope is another Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. He’s going to be our best player this season. A clone could be transformative.

That’s why it suits Sandgaard’s end games not to buy a striker this week - exposing Leaburn & Kanu prematurely to first team action fattens the piglets before they go to market.

Genuine question, why do we moan when we expose our younger players to the first team but yet when other clubs do it and play then regularly, it seems perfectly acceptable. Whats the point in having a youth system if you dont play them. The likes of Clayden, Leaburn are ready for first team football. Making mistakes is part of becoming the player you eventually become. It’s nonsense saying its cheap blah blah. We didnt say that with Gomez, Lookman etc so it shouldn’t be any different. Would Rooney have got his move to Manchester United if Everton didn’t play him at 16. Would Bellingham have scored againat us at 16 and got his move to Borussia Dortmund if Birmingham didn’t play him??? If you are good enough your old enough to play.

Totally agree that from a footballing perspective another Rak-Sakyi will make us very entertaining to watch - and we already have a fairly high xG. We also need more centre backs to cover for injury and suspension. Regarding player sales you have a very valid point and this is one reason why last I predicted a Sandgaard exit in 2023 six months ago. This because the losses might come down a little but we are not getting back to the Championship for bigger gates and media revenues. And player sales revenue looks likely to drop meaning Sandgaard will need to inject another £10M. Why would he do that if we are stuck at 9th? We need those interested to watch the proceedings over the next 20-30 games and then make an offer.

I''m sure you're right about those three players but interestingly, as per Mundell's post, only George Dobson was signed by Sandgaard. The other two were here when he arrived, all be it that they were not first team players at the time. I'm not sure that Dobson will command a very big transfer fee, either. I believe his contract expires next summer and even if we do have a one year extension option it means that his value next summer will be significantly reduced. Maybe we'll sell him in January but even then he only, technically, has six months left on his contract. I don't see a Premier League club signing him so his value will be limited, in my view. Having said that I was flabbergasted with the fee we managed to negoiate with Chelsea for Burstow. It does, however, make Mundell's point that Sandgaard doesn't seem to have signed anyone that is likely to be sold for a significant profit. I can't see the attendances rising much and I don't think there any more, realistic, cost cuting measures available. Apparently we lost £8m last year with £4.7m of transfer income. Sandgaard is going to find Charlton to be a very expensive hobby (realitive to his wealth) soon.

Thomas Sandgaard is looking to add to Charlton’s squad ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.
The Charlton Owner and CEO has been pleased with the recruitment done so far this summer and met with Director of Recruiting Steve Gallen, Director of Analytics Martin Sandgaard and Manager Ben Garner this morning as the group work on final plans before the window slams shut.
When asked about the possibility of adding a striker ahead of Thursday’s deadline, Sandgaard told CharltonTV: "Of course we are looking at it to see if we can create a little more, where we can stretch the opposition defence a little more. If we can have someone that's able to run in behind and create confusion and the stretching of the other defence, that will be helpful.
"We've seen that already here this season and that is something where it's been a little too easy for the opposition defences to cut us off there, so if we can strengthen on that then that is something we're looking at. And if we can get a little more depth in the central defence then that will be helpful, too. Those are the main areas we're looking at."
Sandgaard was also asked if he was expecting player departures. He said: “Expecting is a hard prediction. There are obviously a few players that may not fit our playing style so well anymore. There is some interest from other clubs so we will see how that goes."
Charlton have made seven signings already, with Jesurun Rak-Sakyi the most recent addition. Sandgaard explained the approach to this year’s recruitment. He said: “It's nice to see that when you have done that much business early on and steady, there's not a whole lot of panic and there's not too many moving parts which there can be on deadline day. It's very pleasing to see.
“We have just slowly and methodically been adding to the squad. We have also been recruiting as part of the overall strategy for the club. We will have a period of probably two seasons where we are getting to the point of being financially break-even, or cash flow neutral. Half of that will take place this season and the other half next season. We're slowly increasing revenues so it's nice to see that part of it coming together and we're slowly reducing costs elsewhere.
“This summer we've been able to rely on free agents so far and that has been very helpful, with relatively few loan players so we're still building a squad for the future which is important. We will continue to do that here over the next several transfer windows.
“The new signings have fitted in really well personality-wise and in terms of their technical abilities, their eagerness to learn even more, to fit into the squad and being adaptable with Ben Garner's style of coaching."
Sandgaard has also been impressed with the work of Garner, who he appointed just under three months ago. He added: “[It has been] everything we expected, everything that we saw when we interviewed him. It's been brilliant. It's nice to see not only on the training ground but to see the team, for the most, being consistent in how they are playing no matter what the opposing team is doing to us. There are ways you can adapt to how a game goes but also sometimes it's important that you stick to what works for you. When it clicks, it works really well and the game against Plymouth was a good example of that."
