Ignoring the Twitter account with 3 Followers, the John Marquis rumours are not going away. I can’t see how signing a player like this would complement the owners desire to play a more fluid pressing game. We shouldn’t be signing players until we have a new manager in place, IMO, which is why a speedy appointment is imperative. Richard Cawley has said he not heard that charlton are after john maequis, and no deal for any player is close but club is working on deals Working on deals without a manager!!! Sums up where we are as a football club. A new manager would want to build his own team not have Martin 'Pepe' Sandgaard and expert scout Steve Gallen conjure one up for him using peanuts.

Much as I love to see our kids coming through and doing well, and I like to remain loyal to them (Albie ) , …..in my opinion Josh Davison is about as much use as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest.

^^^^^^^^^^ Confirmation from Rich Cawley then that it’s the Sandgaard’s leading on player recruitment. A role that neither is qualified for. bexleyboy ??

By my fag packet calculations, Davison had 15 league games this season, 8 starts and scored 2 goals. Of subs he only once got 30+ minutes. He played a single game with Stockley as a support striker (when the latter was sent off on 17) but otherwise was picked because JS was out. He is barely over 6ft so harsh to judge him playing as a target man during a period we were playing hoofball, he is a better player than that. Only 22 so more to come from him, yet our football experts here have written him off but 9 in 21 from a side only 17 places below us doesn't lie. I'm more of a football expert than Josh Davison is a footballer put it that way. You try try sugar coating it all you like mate but the fact remains Josh Davison is out of his depth in League football. People were saying the same about Joe Pigott at similar age and after a couple years experience are clamouring for us to sign him. Even I'd have JP rather than JM. 9 in 21 is clearly not out of his depth. Whether he can repeat in L1 is moot. I think he can in the right setup, IE not as a target man. He can also do the high press.

Thomas himself advised previously of the structure Yeah, but previously we had a manager with some input and of course football knowledge. Now the football knowledge is solely in the hands of Gallen. Worrying times. This isn’t Football Manager! There needs to be an overarching strategy / tactics. You can’t just sign players in positions because they have great performance stats. We’ll end up with 4 target men upfront.

Cawley’s Tweet yesterday has at least exposed Sandgaard’s lunacy to a wider section of our fanbase.
Thomas Driesen >>>> Martin Sandgaard.
What is the difference?

Even though I don't like the way the club is run, and have doubts about Martin Sandgaard's role, most clubs have some kind of analytical approach. Data must be part of the process, and I'm sure that it minimises mistakes, if analysed properly. Driesen did, if what I've read elsewhere, identify some players that have gone on to have very successful careers long before they were noticed by the media. I think he was unpopular becasue he was associated with Duchâtelet, and the club did make some mistakes on rectruitment, but there were some successes too.

I had a read up recently on the data analysis and granular detail that Brentford and Brighton go into with player recruitment. It is staggering - but there is one glaring difference to us - they both employ highly qualified analysts with stellar CVs * in the industry*. You might conclude that both club’s superb recruitment records speak to that. Is there any example of an owner’s son with a background as a middle manager in a US medical devices company being given such a key footballing role and executing it successfully ? It’s the nepotism and bullshit that grates.

Agreed, data must inform decisions on players nowadays. Inform being the key word. Data analysis doesn’t make the decision. The issue we have is on who is making the decisions. It seems to be the same person analysing the data or the owner, whom has said has little knowledge on such subjects. Maybe Gallens role is bigger than “negotiating contracts”. It’s very concerning. Who is providing the overall long term strategy?

It’s the nepotism and bullshit that grates. I think this is the key challenge a lot of us have with the way the club is being run. Data analysis is key - to ensure you get the right type of player, i.e. one that will fit with the club's overall plan, playing style and team dynamic. The problem we have is that we have the son, with no experience in data analysis (he's not Lego Marden) linked to no visible overall plan, playing style or team dynamic. That is a recipe for further missteps in the transfer market.

We just need a qualified DoF and manager to slot in AND given appropriate budgets to strengthen... As that's not happening we can watch in anticipation of another failure to break into the top six, another £7M losses racked up. Been saying all year that ideally Sandgaard moves on in 2023 after these losses mount up without tangible progress.

Been saying all year that ideally Sandgaard moves on in 2023 after these losses mount up without tangible progress. I fear that if we get a windfall from Pope or Gomez moving that might give Sandgaard the budget to extend that to 2024. The long term cost is the damage to the hard core fan base. I’m not sure where everyone’s threshold point is but another two seasons like the last one and the season ticket sales will, inevitably, fall.

I’m sure I must have read this article about the club’s transfer policy when it was uploaded to the website last September, though I don’t remember doing so. Anyway, it’s remarkably coherent and sensible. What do we think went wrong? Serious question.

I’m sure I must have read this article about the club’s transfer policy when it was uploaded to the website last September, though I don’t remember doing so. Anyway, it’s remarkably coherent and sensible. What do we think went wrong? Serious question. I have concerns about the data algorithm. Clearly they used that but it didn’t identify outstanding players within our budget. From my days doing an degree in IT it was always the quality of the person/team building the algorithm that was most valuable. Data is useless unless someone that understands it, can analyse it and knows, exactly, what they are looking for, is using it. However, I think the real problem, last summer, was that there was nowhere near as much urgency as necessary and there was too much focus on ‘getting a good deal’ to build as much potential for increased value. Thus we were not willing to pay what the players, we needed, were worth and they signed for someone else. Sure, last summer was an outlier because Ipswich and Wigan were offering much more money than the third division usually does but we failed (and I suspect refused) to offer competitive deals to the players and/or their agents. In the end we spent more, of course, as the end of the window didn’t see players’ and agents’ demands fall, it saw them rise as clubs, like ours, were desperate and panicked. If the data analysis is adequate, or better, and if the Sandgaard’s are willing to pay the going rate to sign players early, then it could be a much better outcome this summer. They are big ifs though, and I’m not sure we have anyone at the club that recognises this, and has the influence to force it through.

Not defending the appointment at all, but apparently Tony Khan has recruited his son to do a similar job at Fulham, so we're not the only club where nepotism is rife.

I missed this when the FA released it a few weeks ago, but here’s their official list of intermediary fees for the period Feb 2, 2021 to January 31 2022. We spent around £195k, the sixth highest in the division behind Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich, Wigan, Sunderland and Wycombe. The correlation between this ranking and transfer spend and wage budget obviously won’t be perfect, but it’s probably a fair indicator of relative spend. And it’s no surprise that the biggest spenders tend to be at the upper end of the table and the lowest spenders at the bottom. Just thought it was an interesting data point.

Thomas Sandgaard said recently that his boy had “blown his mind” (yes, really) with the quality of his work at CAFC. Now, either we are about to make 7/8 brilliant signings as a result of little Sandgaard’s work, or Daddy had been talking out of his arse, again.

So let's put a different slant on it. Let's just say Matt Taylor comes in and having managed and brought through some excellent Exeter City youngsters these past couple of years, one of the first things he does is ask the 'owner' if he can bring two or three of them with him as he feels we need them in certain areas. Is Tommy going to tell him that he'll have to ask his son to check them out on his little black box first!!?
