There are some sports where danger is an inherent element; Boxing, motor racing, other sports with a lot of physical contact like Rugby, American Football, and to a lesser extent Soccer.
There are other sports which are just as exciting to those who love them but carry practically no risk of death or serious injury; Tennis, Golf, snooker (debatable whether that one is a sport or a game...) etc. Yes freak events can happen even in some of those sports. But the chances of really nasty injuries are almost zero.
Personally, I don't see how the deliberate introduction of the fear of needlessly inflicted injury (or the injury itself) makes Cricket a better or more exciting game than it was before bodyline or bouncers came along.
When cricketers had their faces smashed in or their skulls cracked, the response of the sport was not to reduce the level of violence which caused such injuries, but rather just increase the level of protection. So the violence could continue or even be ramped up further, while injuries sustained were kept on the politically correct side of 'serious'.
I can understand the need for padding on the legs, strong gloves and protection for the crown jewels, but do modern batsmen really need to walk out onto the pitch with about as much protective gear on them as an ice hockey player?
Just ban the kind of bowling that calls for that daft level of protection.

Just ban the kind of bowling that calls for that daft level of protection. But they don’t walk out with the same protection as an ice hockey player and given your thinking, why would a hockey player wear that much protection ? The protection isn’t a requirement, it’s a choice. And as a point of order 😁 you failed to mention the most dangerous of sports which I believe is almost anything equine. Climbing on the back of an animal like an exocet missile with a tangerine for a brain and temperament of disgruntled badger with toothache... now that’s dangerous and the men and women who do it have my admiration.

Jesus wept, England are crap. What’s going on? Awful shot selection, throwing away wickets. No point in having one of the fastest bowlers in the world if the batsmen are even quicker on the way back to the pavilion. Too much emphasis on white ball hit and hope nonsense. Aussieaddick, the Ashes are yours again unless there’s a massive turnaround in the English camp.

After today's batting performance I'd simply have to conclude that England didn't really want to win the Ashes.
If they had been paid to throw the series they could scarcely have done worse.

Two reasonably ordinary batting sides. Could this get interesting still? 3rd day pitch, should be at its easiest. Couldn't agree more on the white ball consequences, but I may be just old school when it comes to how to play test cricket.

Wow - take it all back. From abject to magnificent. The fabulous game of cricket. A New Zealander beats Australia playing for England

As a cricket fan, this summer has been by far the best I’ve ever experienced.
I’m off to Old Trafford for the fourth test, absolutely over the moon that we still have something to play for.
