Charlton have completed the signing of midfielder Matt Smith on a loan until the end of the season from Manchester City.
The 20-year-old Wales international becomes the Addicks' second signing of transfer deadline day following the arrival of Aiden McGeady in the early hours of Friday morning.
Smith will see some familiar faces having played alongside both Jonny Williams and Tom Lockyer in his young international career which has seen him capped seven times for Ryan Giggs' side
Manager Lee Bowyer said: “I’m delighted to have a second midfielder through the door. I’m looking forward to working with him, he’s another young one that is going to give us plenty of energy in the middle of the park. It’s a good positive signing for me.”
Smith, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Queens Park Rangers, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of recent midfield loanees Krystian Bielik, Josh Cullen, Sam Field and Conor Gallagher, who have all flourished under the tutelage of Bowyer and Assistant Manager Johnnie Jackson.
“It’s a wonderful football club with a lot of history,” Smith said.
“I just can’t wait to get going. I’ve come here to try and get an opportunity to play and prove to everyone that I can do it at this level.
“I spoke to Locks [Tom Lockyer] and he just told me what an amazing football club it is and that the feel for the club is really nice which helped me make the decision to join this club.”
Charlton Athletic Director of Football Steve Gallen said: “He’s a good football player, he can handle the ball, he’s a good passer of the ball, he gets up and down the pitch.
“It’s something we said a lot in the summer about players, he’s got a point to prove. He was very, very keen to come to us, he was pushing to come and have a chance to play and get in our team and prove that he’s a good player at this level, so I’m pleased to get him in.”

QPR used 20 year old Smith 8 times in the league since he signed for them on loan in the summer.
He started two games (and was subbed in both) and came on as a substitute in 6 games. The most match time he had on the pitch for QPR was an hour, back in August.
Smith played most recently in 3 games during the Christmas period. I assume he was a substitute in all of those games, because did not play more than 24 minutes in any one game. His last outing was on January 1st.
Smith was an unused substitute in 9 other QPR games.
So he's a bit of an unknown quantity.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, but apparently can play further forward in midfield, or as a left-back or right-back.

Gutted thought it was the striker from Millwall. Underwhelmed again.
These aren't Bowyer signings. It's a case of who is available for the peanuts we have.
Fuck off Southall.

FC Twente were Dutch 2nd Division Champions that season, winning 25 of their 38 league games. Matt Smith started in 34 of those games, often for the full 90 minutes. He scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist.

That lack of game time at QPR is surely a little concerning?

FC Twente were in the second division last season which equates to our L2. Twente is a big club though, with an incredible fan base. It's not as easy as it sounds to do well there. I mean yeah the league isn't very spectacular, but the club/pressure/environment to get promoted will definitely added value.

This was obviously completed earlier in the day as it was still light in the photo, was it before 12 noon?
He will get my support whatever as he is now a Charlton player and he must have something about him belonging to Man City and playing for Wales, but . . .
After all the tweeting this morning and going on about a phone for supa deals this feels all rather flat to me!
2 loans so we are only at the same numbers in the squad as before the opening of the window. A month later and with 3 hours left, we have still not added to the squad, what are the chances now?
Edit:- Cawley has said he was signed after 12 noon!

Two things: Let's not prejudge the squad and new arrivals until we see them play in these final 17 games. Especially now Stoke just lost 4-0! And let's not fall into the manager cult syndrome! There will always be a tension between Bows, Gallen and those charged with funding the club with debt and equity. In 2007-09 Pardew was appointed and won a battle against a dysfunctional board - that battle nearly cost our club due to reckless spending trying to regain EPL status within two years. Mundell has kept an eye on Bow's stance and language. Its essential that in the first 100 days they hold together as we battle relegation fears and in preparation for a summer clear out / restructure of the squad. Not promising progress - just saying that theres an opportunity to step up over the summer with so many out of contract. Let's see where we are 100 days after the takeover!

Fuck off yourself and give the guy a chance Mate, you’re new here. While I don’t agree with the sentiment about MS until he’s had chance to explain the window himself, we do not tell other members on this board to FO. An apology from you would be in order.

I may not have posted much, but I’ve been a member and reading this forum for years, and from what I’ve seen posters being rude to each other is hardly a rarity.
Considering the pretty universal hatred with which the previous regime was held, I just don’t understand how anyone can already have such a negative feeling towards MS. Be cautious yes (I am) but slagging him off because you think he’s not got the credentials you think a chairman should have is pretty low.
Let’s get through to the summer, having stayed up, we can start again properly then, and then people can be judged on the basis of their performance now rather than what they did 3 years ago.
And if it satisfies you, I apologise.

And if it satisfies you, I apologise. Fair play to you, TM. And I do believe that we’re singing off the same song sheet regarding MS. Perhaps he was over exuberant in that first press conference with LB, which massively heightened fans’ expectations of what the transfer Window would bring. The ‘massive’ talk perhaps also raised the prices of players about whom we enquired. In the end I’m glad we didn’t overpay for anyone; that route rarely brings success. Another underwhelming window is over but let’s face it, we’ve had far worse in recent years. Like you I’m hoping it’s enough, with those returning from injury, to see us stay up. Then let’s see what the summer brings before we fully judge MS.
