We need somebody to go toe to toe with Cattermole and Leadbitter.
I would go 3-5-2 with Aribo free to roam in a five man midfield.
Thoughts?

4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. We should certainly start with Taylor and Aribo and would add Williams to that list. Pratley, Cullen and Bielik are all Championship calibre players and the back five kinda picks itself.

Whatever happens we should not start Parker. I would pick the following.
Phillips Dijksteel, Bauer, Pearce Purrington Williams, Cullen, Bielik, Aribo Vetokele, Taylor
Subs Maxwell, Solly, Sarr, Pratley, Reeves, Parker Lapslie

I think the formation will depend on whether McGeady plays or not. He is arguably one of the best players in League One and should be playing at a much higher level.

Looking at Sunderland they have been playing 5 in mid and one up front .. can’t see them doing that in a one of game .... our problem is Gooch and McGready if they both play then we may have to opt for three at the back and wing backs ... a diamond system will leave us very open and McGready v Diksteel is a non starter as far as I am concerned
In a one off game you need to start with two up front .. no good having striker on the bench when you go behind because you don’t want to be chasing a game at Wembley ... go out from the start to win it .

I think I agree.
I also think you keep Sarr in ahead of Pearce for the passing out from the back (he seems to start all of our moves).
Phillips - Bielik Bauer Sarr - Dijksteel Pratley Cullen Williams Purrington - Aribo - Taylor.
Having said that....Taylor tends to do good work out wide (I love those low balls in). If Igor is ok to start....
Phillips - Bielik Bauer Sarr - Dijksteel Pratley Cullen Aribo Purrington - Vetokele - Taylor.

You just have to remember that Pearce is an accident waiting to happen if he gets overly aggressive... and he lacks pace and match sharpness..

Parker had a poor game on Friday, but so did most of the team. He put in a real shift on his previous two appearances, and that was appreciated by his teammates and the fans. He occupies the back four with his runs, wins some in the air, and is just the sort of player who’ll miss chances, but pop up with a rare goal when least expected. One up top (as suggested by others) reminds me of the Robinson era when 4231 worked so rarely, and hasn’t worked when Bowyer tried it (post Karlan). Perhaps if they’d been working on it in training maybe, but I doubt they have been.

I agree newstreethill.
I don’t think we should change the side too much and certainly not one up front...

If Vetokele is not fit to replace Parker, I'd go same eleven that started the second half v Donny. Pratley's experience was invaluable when he came on for Morgan.
Of all the various options, the one I cannot fathom is Dick Plumb wanting to drop Naby to the bench. Why on earth would you do that?

Before selecting a formation and personnel Bows and Jacko need to think long and hard as to who they think is likely to perform up to their potential after the high stress match last Friday.
Undoubtedly some did freeze but the gaffer will have to make a judgement as to who amongst them has been able to learn from the experience. Given the age and experience within the Black Cats midfield Pratley looks a shoe in.

Bottom line is , we lost that match on Friday and rightly so , and if he’s preparing for Sunday as he’s said , as it’s just another game , then there will undoubtedly be changes....
I’d start Pratley and Williams over Morgan and Parker , thought Parker was very poor , especially his hold up play , went over way to easily on numerous occasions , gave the ball away and was looking at referee for free kicks all the time...
On a separate note , after watching the last half dozen games closely , I think there’s been a marked improvement in Djksteel’s play going forward , and I hope he starts over Solly...

We are going to need strong characters on Sunday. There is nobody stronger than Jason Pearce. Having said all that I wouldn't be too unhappy to see Naby play.

Is Naby fasting for Ramadan on Sunday? If he is, I don't think he should start because you can't be in the best place not eating or drinking before a game.

I'm not convinced that players froze so much. It maybe that we simply played a different game from our usual one. When pushing forward, we seemed a lot more prone to looking for a sideways or 'less risky' option, which often led to us being closed down and losing posession. If Igor is available, it would be a risk - Parker is basically a hard working tier three player. Igor can aspire to more, but he has usually come back from injuries a weaker version of himself. On his day, he can be a great addition, but we need him to have one of those sort of days. I'd always back Parker for effort on recent showings, but this is Wembley, we may need an extra something or other. maybe start Parker with Igor poised to come on if Sunderland (or Parker) tire. I did feel Taylor was a bit isolated against Doncaster as we began to sit/be pressed back.

However, I think it was the pressure of not making a mistake which slowed down I play. Too often the ball went sidewards or backwards - Cullen was the notable exception - whereas over the past couple of months we attacked so quickly with probing forward passes. Bows and Jacko will undoubtedly be working on this
