So the high earners that are leaving won't have their wages put into other players? Or am I reading into that too much?

I bet it doesnt..I would think players will be on a more normal wage, unlike the ones negotiated by Katrien Miere?.. Tony Watt had been rumoured to be on high wages, along with Igor?, we had Texiera a while back, Patrick Bauer maybe on high wages for Div 1?. So I suppose as these disappear budget drops, as it wont go on paying others more. Kashi was another one I bet...

He only wants two players for each position. That's 22 players we had 28 players last year.

Seems to have played all his football in the north, so not surprising.

Why would he not ? Born and grew up in Lancashire so has family etc up there, it’s 30 minutes from his home town, he has played over 50 games on loan at Fleetwood in the past and is quite obviously happy there.

We're really in trouble. It's all well and good LB and SG having plans to bring players In, but if we can't spend another penny, we are in trouble. Any free transfer good enough for this level will have interest from top league one and mid to low championship teams. Each time they will be offered more at the other clubs. Can see a very stressful window ahead for LB and SG. Let's see who these players are that they are on about joining the lads next Friday. It will show what kind of player they are capable of bringing in with our wage budget and the attraction that LB brings. Very worrying when each player we are rumoured with (whether it comes from a WUM or a trustable source) seems to be more likely to sign for clubs similar or even smaller to us. They can't all be offering huge wages. This takeover needs to happen before the window closes or we are going to struggle... a lot. Unfortunately, this is spot on in my view. It’s going to be really tough for Bowyer and Gallen. We’ll need to get lucky with two or three loans and hope one or two younger players are able to step up. Lapslie and Morgan, for example. As you say, we desperately need a takeover to be completed quickly. Once again, Duchatelet appears to be acting somewhat irrationally. It’s understandable that he wants to contain his losses and it’s clear he has no interest in funding a club in the Championship. However, anyone buying a club in the Championship will expect to employ Championship standard players and hence to pay Championship wages. The idea that the club will be more attractive if losses are lower is simply bonkers. After all this time, it seems Duchatelet still doesn’t accept that he needs to focus on ‘what’s required’ rather than pretend he can operate as if things work the way he thinks they should. We all know something needs to be done to address the economics of football in the Championship. It’s a financial graveyard. By all means lobby for change, but in the meantime you’ve got to get up and dance. If you don’t, you’ll get buried. Let’s hope that takeover is close.

Losing Bauer, Purrington, Williams, Aribo, Cullen and Bielik in itself would be a huge blow to any club trying to make the step up, but to then expect to replace all those with freebies and loans seems like a very tough ask.
I back Bowyer and Gallen to build a first choice XI which can be competitive, but then once injuries inevitably hit will our reserves have what it takes to step up?

Bauer and Aribo gone... the rest are in the balance. As posted elsewhere we have the opportunity to move forwards but it's simply not clear whether the club is aiming for 21st or lower mid table. Bottom line is that we absolutely need 15 quality players in the squad... in Bows and Galken we have to trust!

Charlton's promotion has effectively smoked Roland out - it is now clearer than ever what motivates his decision making. And this analysis has described it perfectly in my view.

Charlton's promotion has effectively smoked Roland out - it is now clearer than ever what motivates his decision making. And this analysis has described it perfectly in my view. It really is extraordinary @lardiman A few years ago one of the leaders of the Standard Liege ‘Socios’, who was very thoughtful about what was going on there and had studied both their finances and those of St Truiden etc., told me ‘We just don’t understand Duchâtelet’. The reason, of course, is that the owner’s judgement and decision often doesn’t make any sense. In his post above, seriouslyred says ‘it’s simply not clear whether the club is aiming for 21st or lower mid table.’ What does appear to be clear is that Duchâtelet simply doesn’t think in these terms. Based on what we’ve been told by Lee Bowyer and Steve Gallen, Duchâtelet has set them a budget for wages which will be the lowest in the Championship. Where the owner ‘got’ that budget from is anyone’s guess, but all other things being equal it means that our ‘expected’ League table position is 24th. It’s no wonder the bookmakers have us amongst the favourites to go down. The thought process here is almost impossible to relate to. Duchâtelet clearly wants to sell, but a club destined for relegation is almost certainly going to be harder to sell than one with a strong and competitive squad. He appears to be damaging the value of his own investment. That just doesn’t make sense, but it might suggest it’s not simply about money for him. Perhaps it’s not even mainly about money? Provided their wage demands are reasonable by Championship standards, signing players like Bauer, and perhaps even Aribo, ought to be an easy win. No transfer fee is involved and they probably had a predisposition to sign if the money was right. A clear unwillingness to compete is an odd strategy in the circumstances. It might cost a new owner more to get ‘like for like’ replacements. A year or two ago I was discussing Duchâtelet with one of my daughters. She doesn’t follow football, but she said ‘perhaps he’s just reckless’. I think she’s on to something. It appears he’s determined to do it ‘his way’, especially when he is opposed to conventional wisdom. He therefore sets his own reference point and, within reason, isn’t that concerned by the financial consequences. Perhaps he has his own value system which he’s determined to stick to even if it means he’s on his own? A bit like a cricketer who continues to ‘walk’ when nobody else does? This might explain why he’s spent money in areas we might not have expected him to, £9m on infrastructure, for example, and yet isn’t prepared to spend when we believe it’s absolutely necessary. To an extent at least, the money may not be that important to him. It’s certainly not as important as the principle involved. Notwithstanding all of this, and his recent rants against the EFL, he’s clearly decided that the ‘game’ is too expensive even for him and that’s spectacularly true in the Championship. He needs to sell, therefore. Let’s hope someone rides to his rescue, and ours, quickly and before it’s too late. Surviving in the Championship with this owner will be a much bigger challenge for Lee Bowyer than getting us out of League One. Just my perspective.

MundellIn response to your long reply above. In my opinion the reason RD has spent large money on infrastructure but won’t splash out on a large wage budget is down to him wanting to run a sustainable club (create top players and sell them for profit on a continuing basis). In an ideal world this would be great for every club and see a much fairer league system. In reality it is a recipe for relegation, it’s why a takeover needs to happen as I didn’t feel last season was a miracle due to having one of the largest budgets in league one, a talented squad and a talented management team. However if we survive this season with the same management team but a nearly completely different squad (losing the continuity of our play from last season) on a shoestring budget then THAT would be a miracle!! It’s a shame that RD cannot see how our club can be sustainable by investing in young talent and selling them in at a high price if necessary but also giving us a good chance of promotion to the EPL. Perhaps he can see it but he’s lost interest, either way it’s definitely time for him to move on and for us to have a more interested and involved owner.

I disagree with this Mundell , ok the Championship is a higher league but where we have an advantage is that we can guarantee playing time to the parent clubs , whereas other teams in our division may not and we have had a great record of improving players... for example say Leeds , should they start this season with much the same squad as last year , they will need to get better players than what they have to guarantee playing time and no doubt they have much bigger squads than us , so should they go along the 5 loan route then they will have no room in their matchday squad for 5 current high earners... Also why is there more competition than last year...? This doesn’t make sense as we are a league higher so we can give players who don’t want to go below Championship level a chance.. for example cutting out the Sunderland’s and Portsmouth’s of this world... Just my thoughts

There are many good points in the posts above , and all point to the same conclusion .
RD was never really interested in Charlton , beyond his own vision of how he might earn money from it through our famed academy providing him at no expense with players that he could sell for big money.
Any money he parts with is seen as an unnecessary expense now, instead of how fans might see it as an investment. He was never really interested in risking buying young players who he might one day be able to make a good profit on, although he has conceded a small fee recently for the young player from Orient .
Investing in an acceptable contract for Aribo, would see him earn a considerable profit if he was sold later for a decent fee, instead he will lose him for nothing . Investing in the team in the very beginning ,when we were ninth in the Championship, might have taken him to the millions available in the Premier league, but he never wanted that .
His interest now is at an all time low, with the losses associated with being in the Championship, so it suits all concerned if he sells as soon as possible, and I really hope for everyone’s sake that it happens soon .

Just my thoughts Yes this is something that I have considered also.. .LB and his staff did fantastically well to bring in Cullen and Bielik who could’ve easily insisted on a loan in the Championship . They both proved to be amongst the very top players in the league. If we can apply the same principles this season, maybe we can bring in players who are nearly Premier league players , who need more game time than they will get with their parent club . Our relationship with Arsenal and West Ham, will only have been enhanced by the improvements that their players have made while with us.

The large spending on infrastructure, was not £9m nor was it benevolent, and stopped prematurely. I believe he was trying to replicate Staten, where he built players accomodation then turned it into a hotel. Here he pulled the plug when he learnt that wouldn't wash with our planning laws.

Richard Cawley link above...
“Charlton midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey is set to extend his contract.
The 25-year-old, who missed nearly all of last season with cruciate knee ligament damage, is due to be a free agent on July 1.
“We’re nearly there with Jake,” said Addicks manager Lee Bowyer. “It could happen quick.
“And we’ll start talking to Anfernee [Dijksteel] again. We spoke to him at the end of last season but he said: ‘I want to see what you are doing’.
“We’ll try to tie Joe [Aribo] down and I’d like to bring in some new players before we go back [for pre-season] next Friday so that they can all start pre-season, then try to bring in another one or two with maybe a few loans.
“I’m aiming to get at least three in before next Friday, possibly four. And before we go on the pre-season tour I would like that number to be up to four or five.
“The lads have hardly had any break, but it is what it is. We have just got to kick on now and get as fit as we can get – be like machines – because this league is going to be tough.
“There are a lot of athletes in this league and we’ve got to match them. Last season we were one of the fittest sides in the league, but we are going to another level now.”
Bowyer is targeting The Valley being packed out next season to aid their cause.
“I want to thank the fans for their support,” he said. “It means a lot and hopefully we can start a new journey and see where it takes us.
“For sure, we are going to need their help this season – even more so than the last one.
“I want to push for 20,000 there as a minimum for our home games because we are going to need them.
“I know it is going to be hard to set the same kind of record at home as last season, because we only lost two league games there all season. But we are going to need a good home record to be able to stay in the league – and they are going to play a massive part in that.”

I think if Aribo decides to stay it’ll be cause a takeover is close and he’s been convinced we will have funds to strengthen. Can’t see him turning down Rangers for a relegation scrap
