But I still think we need a third striker who will push them both for their place in the side.
Ajose is such a frustrating player who played his part tonight but hasn't during the majority of his time at the Valley Charlton. He has a huge part to play on Saturday and perhaps he can save his Charlton career. I have wanted him gone so many times but there's just something in there that suggests he can still be a key player for us this season.
By the way, Taylor's hat trick tonight makes him the tops corer in L1.

Agree about Ajose Reams , he is so frustrating. I would love him to turn it around , and become the player that I thought he would be .

It was mentioned on Valley pass tonight that Taylor not playing Saturday any ideas? That's why we need another striker, one who is better than Grant and can do what Taylor does for us.

I’m as frustrated with Ajose as everyone but there are times when he’s looking to make runs on the blind side of defenders but the ball is not passed to him quick enough or not at all. Tonight there were occasions when a forward pass was needed to set him free but instead it went backwards or sideways. Sometimes he simply doesn’t get the service he needs.

Yes I would agree with that , he doesn’t get the service he needs to get enough chances to score . The problem for me is, if we are not going to play to his strengths, or if he doesn’t suit the system that we are playing , he never will be a success at Charlton , and that’s no good for us or him .

Taylor has grit, termination and skill. His attitude is bang on, you can see it when he scores AND when he misses.
The thing is, I think anyone is asking too much with this owner to get three of him, much as I'd love that.
As for Ajose - what to do. Is it just a case that once he scores a few his confidence will bloom? I don't think so as he appears to lack application and determination. Does he think he is better than he is and he feels he should be somewhere 'better' or more suitable for him club and position wise, I wonder. If so, the one thing that will solve that issue is to put in 100% and get noticed for the right reasons. He is not lacking talent. A conundrum for BowJack to unpick.

Vetokele is out for a while and was far from impressive when he has played. By all accounts, Ajose put in a shift last night. Ajose must know that he is now playing for his career as he enters the last six months of his contract at CAFC. Not saying the OP is wrong but the management team have the delicate task of trying to coax the best out of what they have... and shaping a request for x, y and z in January to enhance our promotion credentials.

I think it's around 27 or 28 now but Karlan should really have pushed that figure past 30 yesterday.
He has come on leaps and bounds this season but I repeat what I have been saying for the last couple of months which is another goalscorer is needed to get among the goals and that will also keep pushing KG too.

I didn't realise Karlan had more goals than Lyle in the league. He needs to chip in with some more assists though.
If he could improve his decision making for the final pass and his composure for finishing he's going to be a great player. Seems like he's been around for ages but he's still only 21.

Here is a list of the top 25 goalscorers in League One (league goals only) Player | Goals scored | Team | John Marquis | 16 | Doncaster Rovers | Josh Maja | 14 | Sunderland | Tom Eaves | 14 | Gillingham | Ian Henderson | 13 | Rochdale | Karlan Grant | 13 | Charlton Athletic | Lyle Taylor | 12 | Charlton Athletic | Freddie Ladapo | 12 | Plymouth | Kieffer Moore | 12 | Barnsley | Paddy Madden | 11 | Fleetwood Town | James Collins | 11 | Luton Town | Ivan Toney | 10 | Peterborough United | Matt Godden | 10 | Peterborough United | Jamal Lowe | 10 | Portsmouth | Elliot Lee | 10 | Luton Town | Lee Novak | 10 | Scunthorpe United | Ronan Curtis | 9 | Portsmouth | Ched Evans | 9 | Fleetwood Town | James Henry | 9 | Oxford United | Jack Payne | 8 | Bradford City | Sean McConville | 8 | Accrington Stanley | Simon Cox | 8 | Southend United | Gareth Evans | 8 | Portsmouth | Mallik Wilks | 7 | Doncaster Rovers | Liam Boyce | 7 | Burton Albion | Billy Kee | 7 | Accrington Stanley |
These are the current top 7 teams in League One (the serious promotion contenders at this point) League Place | Team | Total goals scored (league) | Goals scored by players in top 25 | Number of goal scorers in top 25 | 1 | Portsmouth | 46 | 27 ... (59%) | 3 | 2 | Luton Town | 50 | 19 ... (38%) | 2 | 3 | Sunderland | 47 | 14 ... (30%) | 1 | 4 | Charlton Athletic | 46 | 25 ... (54%) | 2 | 5 | Barnsley | 43 | 12 ... (28%) | 1 | 6 | Peterborough United | 47 | 20 ... (43%) | 2 | 7 | Doncaster Rovers | 49 | 23 ... (47%) | 2 |
This table shows that Charlton and Portsmouth are the only two teams in the top 7 who have over half their total number of goals scored by players in the current top 25. For Portsmouth the number of goals scored by other players so far this season is only 19. In Charlton's case it is 21. Fewer than one goal per game. Luton Town, Sunderland and Barnsley all have more than 30 goals scored by other members of their teams. This ability to score from a wider variety of players is usually regarded as a strength. In the case of Portsmouth, 27 of their goals (over half their total) have come from three players. In Charlton's case, the majority of our goals have come from only two players. We are the only team in the top 7 who owe more than half of their total league goal tally to only two players.
I would say these figures support Reams' conclusion in the first post of this thread. We do need a third striker who can not only push Taylor and Grant for their places, but who can step up if one of them gets injured. So far this season we have been plagued by injuries in midfield and defence, but Grant and Taylor between them have only missed two games through injury. If one of them is sidelined for a couple of months our promotion push could be derailed if we have nobody else who can be relied upon to cover for them. And by cover for them I mean score at least 2 goals every 5 games, not just run around making up the numbers.

As always top data Lardi and 100% relating to a quality striker being the final piece of the jigsaw. The Experimental 361 site data I recently posted showing that we were the only club not able to play the same starting line up in consecutive matches (Pompey/Hatters/Posh are in double figures) explains why our midfielders and CBs are nowhere near the list - most have only played about half the available games!
