We all know he won't which goes to show how misguided our fans of today are.
Lawrence moved to Charlton as reserve-team manager and was later promoted to full-time manager in 1982.
During his first few years in charge we were in a poor financial situation and came close to going out of business in 1984. Then came the Valley departure but despite this Lawrence not only kept us in the Second Division but gained promotion to the First Division in 1986 ending our 29-year absence from the top-flight.
With limited resources, he kept us at this level for four years, before being relegated in 1990.
The thanks he'll get is a ripple of applause, if that and to me that is very sad especially after what we saw today.

Always gets a big hand from me and is up there alongside Curbs as best manager since Jimmy Seed!

I started following the club seriously under Lennie.
We'd never have achieved what we did under Curbs without the foundation and expectation level Amongst the fans created by LL.
LL - truly one of my life's heroes.

Lets not forget that Lawrence arguably saved Charlton as we know it - he kept us in the top flight of English football with no ground, no money, and 5,000 gates. Comparing his achievements to Powells is like comparing Professor Sir Stephen Hawking to Ben Hayes.
We all know the reason for the double standards though, don't we ?

Lennie will get a great welcome I'm sure. It wont be at Powell levels for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Lennie's fantastic achievements were at a time when crowds were small and secondly he didn't leave us in the best way. Possibly thirdly, Powell shows a genuine empathy and affection with the fans. The tunnel jump is a bit silly but is ours and his and means something.
If it wasn't for Lennie, we might not have a club to support so I certainly appreciate him. Powell is more recent and more fans associate with him. I remember that left back in our Premier sides who fell in love with this club of ours - it was clear to most fans and that has created a bond. I also remember the pride when he was picked for England. As a long standing supporter, that meant a lot to me.
But it won't be double standards.

Spot on From me, Lennie will get the same sort of reception as I gave Powell. However, St Andrews in 1987 will never be surpassed imo, and I count myself lucky to have witnessed it.

Lennie Lawrence for me was truly a great manager. With very limited funds, he kept us in the old Div 2 and then built a promotion winning team. All this and having to relocate to another ground and keeping the team in the old Div 1 for four years is testament to the mans managerial skills. I hope he gets the reception on Tuesday night he richly deserves.

Of course he should, but a lot of the younger fans won't remember him, so time will be a problem.

Perhaps some of these youngsters should read up a bit on the history of our club .They might find that the likes of Lennie and Curbs achieved more for Charlton its as the song goes "And if you know your history ".

I was a ST Andrews too - I recall we were massively outnumbered and how intimidating an atmosphere it was. I remember running down the terrace and throwing my scarf at Bob Bolder - As did many others.

Approaching the Bull Ring, a load of Birmingham at the top of the road thought we were Leeds and xmas had come early. Discovered we were Charlton and gave us a cheer and said have a safe journey home..............true story.

Think Lennie deserves a bigger reception then Powell if I am honest.....only disappointment was that we could not give Riga the reception he deserved.

Enlighten me. You know the reason. Nope, I'm at a loss as well. Is it coz he is black? I think the comments about Powell's welcome are misguided. It's not just because he managed us for a couple of years, it's because of the player he was over three spells at the club, his clear love for Charlton and the mark of the man himself - he's one of the most genuinely nicest guys anyone would ever meet. He's a club legend. Lennie did well back in the 80s, exceptionally well (aided by Reams senior of course), and could very well be described as a legend too - but a fair proportion of our crowd wasn't even born then and it was a very different Charlton to that which Powell starred in as a player (and later managed). He also left us somewhat ignominiously, which I always felt sad about because I thought he and Charlton deserved better. I think Lennie deserves a welcome from the man on the mic and the crowd given the opportunity to cheer him - but it never ceases to amaze me that people think applauding one legend is somehow related to whether we should applaud another.

Lennie brought John Humphrey to Charlton for this alone he should be a hero !
Lennie was boss when I went to games the most so will get good applause from me, to turn out the results he did with the resources he had was exceptional.

Forgot to mention he also gave Robert Lee his chance and look what a player he turned out to be.
I know its slightly off topic but i would rate the best managers as follows - Curbs - years of top flight football in my lifetime Lennie - the 1st and best of the 'houdini' managers Jimmy Seed - would be higher in my rankings but before my time so never saw his Charlton play

Lennie always gets a resounding cheer from me. Without him there'd probably be no Charlton now, Great Addicks hero.

Believe Lennie will get applause from our fans, he really is a legend, unlike others who claim legends only came into The Valley since the millenium.

Number of people who didnt even stand up and give him a glance was depressing.
I'm far too young to remember him as a manager but I know my club's history.
